HISA (Hospital Infections Surveillance Assistant) is one of the most original tools on the market to effectively fight the problem of nosocomial infections.

Software systems able to track nosocomial infections should be part of every hospital's standard set of tools. Specific data collection should be planned in order to process the individual patient's risk factors and to evaluate a ward’s performance.
In Italy, hospital originated infections cost nearly 400 million euros each year: they are the primary cause of 25 thousand deaths.

The prospective results supplied by a software of this kind is to help create practices designed to reduce the incidence of nosocomial infections.

Results that can be anticipated are:

  • reduced incidence of nosocomial infections,
  • better health conditions for the patients,
  • shorter patient hospitalization,
  • cost reduction.

CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) gave a general definition of surveillance: "...the ongoing systematic collection, analysis, and interpretation of health data essential to the planning, implementation, and evaluation of public health practice, closely integrated with the timely dissemination of these data to those who need to know."

Data collection, processing and synthesis are critical points in the effecacy and efficiency of surveillance software systems.

HISA is one of the most appropriate tools for tracking, diagnosing, preventing and monitoring nosocomial infections

HISA applies the standard diagnostic criteria published by CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), the ACCP (American College of Chest Physicians), and other important international sources.

Diagnostic standards are automatically implemented for a substantial quantity of infection types such as:
  • SIRS (Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome)
  • Sepsis
  • Severe Sepsis
  • Septic Shock
  • Clinical Sepsis
  • Endocarditis
  • Colonization of the Central Venous Catheter
  • CVC-related Bacteremia
  • Bacteremia
  • Primary Bacteremia
  • Microbiologically Confirmed Bacteremia
  • Asymptomatic Infection of Urinary Tract
  • Nosocomial Pneumonia (CDC)
  • ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome)
  • Superficial Infection of the Surgical Wound (SSI - CDC )
  • Deep Infection of the Surgical Wound (SSI - CDC)
  • Surgical Site Infection – Organ /Cavity (SSI - CDC)

HISA provides three kinds of evaluations:
  • Positive evaluation (infections criteria present)
  • Negative evaluation (infections criteria absent)
  • Inadequate data

It isn’t necessary to enter a complete set of data to register a positive or negative evaluation, as soon as the system has acquired enough parameters it provides results with a minimum data set.

HISA performs the most important statistical and epidemiological evaluations, measuring nosocomial infection rates and relating them to both risk factors and the effective “case mix”. It calculates the incidence of nosocomial infections and the germs that are most frequently involved.

The system applies standard criteria to provide its own evaluation of the infection status that the doctor must confirm or modify with his or her own assessment which the system will record.

Using HISA simplifies Surveillance systems and Quality Control, while assisting the patients’ treatment and diagnosis.
